IMPROVE YOUR GREEN READING WITH THIS SIMPLE PUTTING TIP
Whenever you the wrong speed on a breaking putt, it is difficult
to judge exactly where the correct line of the putt should have
been. This can have a negative effect on your overall ability to
consistently read the greens properly, especially if you
don’t
play as often as you would like. And for newer players this will extend the learning time taken to skillfully read the greens.
Try this on your next few of rounds of golf.
Whenever you miss a breaking putt, and you are sure you hit the correct speed, i.e. the ball will stop at a point
roughly 15-18 inches past the hole, make a note whether you have missed
the hole on the high side or the low side. Mark it on your scorecard,
e.g. “H” &”L”
Keep doing this for a few rounds.
After a short while you will have built a record and you may find there is a definite
error pattern in your break reading abilities.
Most amateur players do not allow enough break, and they
will nearly always miss on the lower side of the hole (when the ball is hit at the correct speed).
This also means as the putt slows down, it has a tendency to be moving
AWAY from the hole and when the putt speed is wrong it can leave a
longer than desired putt to, or back to the hole, with a danger of
missing that one too.
If your record indicates you are missing MOSTLY on the low side of the
hole, do this:
On future putts pick your normal line
as you have always done, and then ADD SOME MORE BREAK and adjust your line to that.
Keep doing this until you start making the putts you know you have hit
at the correct speed. Do the opposite if you mainly miss on the high
side.
You will also find, if originally you were guilty of not allowing
enough break, even if you now hit some putts at the wrong speed the
ball will end up closer to the hole, thus giving you the maximum chance
of holing it on the next putt.
You are still going to miss the putts you hit at the wrong speed, but
at least you will make a few extra putts when you do get the speed
right.
Over a period of time you will gradually adjust to picking the correct
break and will automatically pick the best line first time.
Give it a try, you will save strokes.
